Day Trips from Delphi: Galaxidi, Itea, Amfissa and Beyond
While the archaeological site and museum alone justify a visit to Delphi, the surrounding region of Phocis offers a wealth of experiences within easy reach. From the picturesque harbour of Galaxidi to the olive capital of Amfissa and the beaches of the Corinthian Gulf, you can fill several days with diverse excursions without ever driving more than 40 minutes. Using Delphi as your base is the smartest way to explore central Greece at a relaxed pace.
For those coming from Athens, our guide on how to get from Athens to Delphi covers all transport options. And if you are planning a longer road trip, see our Central Greece road trip itinerary.
Galaxidi (35 km, 30 minutes)
Galaxidi is a beautifully preserved 19th-century seafaring town on the north shore of the Corinthian Gulf. Once one of the most important maritime centres in Greece, it retains the elegant stone mansions, narrow lanes, and serene harbour of its prosperous past. Today it is a quiet retreat popular with Athenians looking for a weekend escape.
Walk along the harbour promenade, swim at the small beaches nearby, visit the Nautical Museum to learn about the town’s shipbuilding heritage, and enjoy fresh seafood at a waterfront taverna. Galaxidi is also the starting point for the annual Clean Monday flour war, one of Greece’s most unusual carnival traditions.
The drive from Delphi to Galaxidi follows a winding road through olive groves with views of the Gulf. It is one of the most scenic short drives in central Greece.
Itea (17 km, 20 minutes)
Itea is the closest coastal town to Delphi and the natural spot for a beach break. The long, palm-lined waterfront has cafés, restaurants, and a sandy beach that stretches toward the Pleistos river delta. The water is calm and shallow, making it suitable for families with young children. See our Delphi with kids guide for more family-friendly suggestions.
Itea was the ancient port of Delphi, where pilgrims arrived by sea to consult the Oracle. The modern town is unpretentious but pleasant, with a thriving olive oil industry. Stop at a local olive press (elaiourgeio) during harvest season (November to January) to taste fresh oil straight from production.
Amfissa (18 km, 20 minutes)
The capital of Phocis, Amfissa sits at the edge of the largest olive grove in Greece, estimated to contain over one million trees. The town’s medieval castle (Kastro) offers panoramic views of the grove stretching to the sea. Amfissa is famous for its cured olives, which have Protected Designation of Origin status. Pick up a bag from a local producer as a delicious souvenir.
The old town around the castle retains a traditional character that feels far removed from the tourist trail. It is a working Greek town where daily life revolves around the plateia (central square), the café culture, and the rhythm of the seasons.
Arachova (11 km, 15 minutes)
The mountain town of Arachova clings to the slopes of Parnassos just east of Delphi. It is covered in detail in our dedicated Delphi and Arachova guide, but in brief: expect stone-built architecture, artisan food shops selling formaela cheese and handmade pasta, lively cafés, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere driven by the nearby ski centre.
Parnassos Ski Centre (35 km, 40 minutes)
Greece’s largest ski resort sits at an altitude of 1,600 to 2,260 metres on Mount Parnassos. With 23 runs and modern lift infrastructure, it attracts winter sports enthusiasts from across the country. Even if you do not ski, a drive up to the centre in winter offers spectacular mountain scenery. For winter travel advice, read the best time to visit Delphi.
Monastery of Hosios Loukas (35 km, 40 minutes)
This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the finest Byzantine monuments in Greece. The 11th-century monastery features stunning gold mosaics and frescoes that rank among the best-preserved examples of middle Byzantine art. Set in a peaceful hillside location amid cypress trees, it offers a contemplative contrast to the bustle of the archaeological site at Delphi. The monastery is included in most Central Greece road trips.
Distomo and the Memorial (25 km, 30 minutes)
On the road to Hosios Loukas, the town of Distomo is home to a sobering memorial and museum commemorating the 1944 massacre by Nazi forces. It is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and an important historical site that provides context for modern Greece.
