Delphi Travel Tips: 15 Things to Know Before You Go
Delphi is one of the most rewarding destinations in Greece, but a little preparation goes a long way toward making your visit smooth and enjoyable. Whether this is your first time or you are returning for a deeper exploration, these practical tips will help you get the most out of your trip. We have gathered this advice from years of welcoming guests at Komody Apartments and from our own experience living in Delphi.
For a comprehensive overview, start with our things to do in Delphi guide and where to stay in Delphi.
1. Stay Overnight
This is the single most important tip. Day trips from Athens give you a rushed two to three hours at the site with no time for the museum, the town, or the surrounding area. Staying at least one night lets you visit the ruins at opening time (a completely different experience), explore Arachova, and enjoy Delphi at a relaxed pace. Two nights is ideal. See our Athens to Delphi guide for transport details.
2. Arrive Early at the Site
The archaeological site is most magical in the first hour after opening. The light is softer, the stones glow, and you may have entire sections to yourself. By mid-morning, tour buses arrive and the experience changes dramatically. If you are staying in Delphi, this is easy: walk to the entrance at opening time and enjoy the site in peace.
3. Buy the Combined Ticket
A combined ticket covers both the archaeological site and the museum, and it is valid for the same day. It costs less than buying separate tickets. Buy it at the site entrance first thing, visit the ruins, then use it for the museum later. Reduced rates are available for EU students with valid ID.
4. Wear Proper Shoes
The archaeological site is on a steep hillside with uneven stone paths, marble surfaces that become slippery when wet, and hundreds of steps. Sandals, flip-flops, and smooth-soled shoes are genuinely dangerous here. Wear comfortable walking shoes or trainers with good grip.
5. Bring Water and Sun Protection
There is very little shade at the site, and in summer temperatures can exceed 35 degrees Celsius. Carry at least one litre of water per person, wear a hat, and apply sunscreen. The climb from the entrance to the Stadium takes 30 to 40 minutes in heat, so pace yourself. For seasonal advice, read the best time to visit Delphi.
6. Do Not Skip the Museum
Many visitors who run out of time skip the museum, which is a mistake. The Charioteer alone justifies the visit, and the collection provides essential context for understanding the ruins. Allow 60 to 90 minutes.
7. Visit the Tholos Separately
The Tholos at the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia is across the road from the main site, about a 10-minute walk downhill. Many tour groups skip it due to time constraints. It is free to visit and arguably the most photogenic spot in Delphi. Do not miss it.
8. Drive Carefully on Mountain Roads
The road from the highway to Delphi winds through mountains with hairpin turns and occasional rockfall. Drive carefully, especially in wet weather and winter. The road is well-maintained but demands attention. If coming from Athens, the route via Livadia is the most common. Our Athens to Delphi guide covers all options.
9. Parking Is Free and Easy
Unlike many tourist sites, Delphi has free parking along the main road and in dedicated lots near the archaeological site. In summer, spaces near the entrance fill up by mid-morning, so early arrival has multiple benefits. Komody Apartments includes parking for guests.
10. Cash Is Still Useful
While most restaurants and hotels accept cards, some smaller shops, bakeries, and the weekly market are cash-only. ATMs are available in town. Keep some euros on hand for small purchases and tipping.
11. Eat Where the Locals Eat
The restaurants on the main tourist strip are generally decent but not exceptional. Ask your accommodation host for recommendations: the best meals in Delphi are often in less obvious spots or in nearby Arachova. At Komody Apartments, we are always happy to share our favourite places.
12. The Town Is Walkable
Delphi’s town centre is compact and entirely walkable. The main street is about 800 metres long, and everything a visitor needs, including restaurants, shops, ATMs, and the archaeological site entrance, is accessible on foot from Komody Apartments. You do not need a car once you arrive, though one is useful for day trips to Arachova, Galaxidi, and the ski resort.
13. Wi-Fi and Connectivity
All our apartments offer free high-speed Wi-Fi. Most restaurants and cafés also have Wi-Fi. Mobile coverage (4G) is good in town but can be patchy on mountain trails and at higher elevations on Parnassos.
14. Plan for Weather Changes
Delphi sits at 570 metres above sea level, and mountain weather can change quickly. Even in summer, evenings are cooler than at sea level. In spring and autumn, rain can arrive suddenly. Bring layers and a light waterproof jacket. In winter, temperatures regularly drop below freezing and snow is possible. See our seasonal guide for detailed weather information.
15. Respect the Site
Delphi is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a place of enormous historical significance. Stay on marked paths, do not climb on ruins or sit on ancient walls, do not remove any stones or fragments (it is illegal), and keep noise to a minimum. Drones are prohibited over the archaeological site without special permission.
