A Weekend in Delphi: The Perfect 2-Day Itinerary

A weekend in Delphi is one of the best short trips you can take in Greece. In just two days, you can explore one of the most important archaeological sites in the ancient world, visit a world-class museum, wander through a charming mountain town, taste excellent local cuisine, and wake up to views that make you wonder why you ever considered staying only one night. This itinerary gives you a relaxed but comprehensive weekend that captures the best of Delphi without feeling rushed.

Day 1: Arrival, Archaeological Site, and Delphi Town

Morning: Travel and Check-in

Leave Athens early and arrive in Delphi by mid-morning. The drive takes about 2.5 hours via the E75 highway and the scenic mountain road through Arachova. Check into Komody Apartments in central Delphi, drop your bags, and head out. If you booked a room with a view, take a moment to appreciate the panorama of olive trees, mountains, and the distant Corinthian Gulf from your balcony.

Late Morning to Afternoon: The Archaeological Site

Walk to the archaeological site (5 minutes from our apartments). Start with the main sanctuary, following the Sacred Way uphill past the treasuries to the Temple of Apollo. Continue to the Theatre and, if your legs are willing, climb to the Stadium at the top. The route takes you through 800 years of Greek history in a single walk.

After the main site, cross the road to visit the Tholos at the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. The circular temple with its three re-erected columns is the most photographed monument in Delphi. The full history and mythology are covered in our Oracle of Delphi article.

Allow at least 2.5 to 3 hours for both areas. Bring water, sun protection, and comfortable shoes with good grip on the rocky paths.

Late Afternoon: Delphi Town

Return to town and stroll the main street (Vasileos Pavlou and Friderikis). The road runs along the hillside with views at every turn. Browse the small shops selling local products: olive oil soap, mountain tea, jewellery inspired by ancient designs, and handmade ceramics. Stop for a coffee at a café with a terrace view.

Evening: Dinner

Choose one of Delphi’s traditional tavernas for dinner. Order grilled lamb, local cheese, a village salad, and a carafe of house wine. Sit outside if the weather permits and watch the lights come on across the valley. Alternatively, pick up ingredients from the local shops and cook in your apartment kitchen, enjoying a private dinner.

Day 2: Museum, Arachova, and Departure

Morning: The Archaeological Museum

Start the day with complimentary breakfast at Komody Apartments, then walk to the archaeological museum when it opens. Give yourself at least 90 minutes. The highlights include the Charioteer bronze, the Sphinx of Naxos, the twin kouroi of Kleobis and Biton, and the gold and ivory treasures. Understanding the artefacts deepens your appreciation of everything you saw at the site yesterday.

Late Morning: Drive to Arachova

The mountain town of Arachova is just 11 km east, a short and scenic drive through pine forests. Park at the edge of town and walk the cobbled main street. Stop at a bakery for a fresh cheese pie, browse the artisan shops for formaela cheese and local honey, and enjoy a Greek coffee at a café on the main square. Lunch: Arachova or Galaxidi

For a mountain lunch, eat in Arachova. For a coastal experience, drive 35 km to the harbour town of Galaxidi for seafood by the water. Both are excellent choices that give your weekend a different flavour. The road to Galaxidi descends through the olive valley, one of the most scenic drives in central Greece.

Afternoon: Departure or Extension
