The Oracle of Delphi: History, Mythology & What You Can See Today
For over a thousand years, the Oracle of Delphi was the most powerful religious institution in the ancient Greek world. Kings, generals, and citizens traveled to consult the Pythia, the priestess of Apollo.
The Mythological Origins
Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the Earth, and they met at Delphi, marking it as the center of the world with the sacred Omphalos stone. Apollo slew the serpent Python and established his sanctuary here.
How the Oracle Worked
The Pythia sat on a tripod over a fissure in the rock inside the Temple of Apollo. Modern geological research has confirmed ethylene gas from a fault line beneath the temple. Her famously ambiguous answers shaped history.
The Oracle’s Influence on History
- Colonisation: Dozens of Greek colonies founded on the Oracle’s advice
- Persian Wars: The “wooden wall” prophecy led to the Battle of Salamis
- The Pythian Games: Athletic and artistic competitions held every four years
The Decline
Emperor Theodosius I closed all pagan temples in 393 AD. French archaeologists began excavations in 1892, revealing the sanctuary we see today.
